They would ask you for a gift card to buy on eBay, Google Pay, or Target. Then they would ask you to put money on your accounts. If you don’t have any, they would ask you to go to your ATM or bank and then add money. And while you do this the caller would ask you to stay on the phone.

Third, the caller would ask for the gift card number and the PIN which easily gives this scammer access to the money you added to the card. ..

There are various ways the caller can convince you to pay with gift cards they might say that they are from the government, or someone from the tech support, or like there is an emergency and you need to send the money right away or the worst case is that the caller might say that you have just won a prize but first you need to pay some sort of fees. It could also be from any utility company.

What to do if you get scammed?

The best option would be to call the company which issued the card and ask them to freeze the amount right away. Also, if it is online, they can easily track the card, which would further help in the investigation.

Don’t go for the free or the cheap gift cards from these stores and retailers. Always buy the gift card from those you trust, and never go for those that are free or cheap. The reason is because you will end up getting scammed if you do this. Keep the receipt so that if something happens to your gift card, you can easily find out where to get your money back.
