The annual gatherings were originally established in response to the 2008 financial crisis, establishing the summit as the main global forum for economic cooperation. But Mr Sunak warned that this year’s summit – the first since the Kremlin sent troops to Ukraine in February – would not be “business as usual”. Click to subscribe to Sky News Daily wherever you get your podcasts In a statement before his departure, Mr Sunak said: “Putin’s war has wreaked havoc around the world – destroying lives and throwing the international economy into turmoil. “This G20 summit will not be normal. “We will call out the Putin regime and reveal its utter contempt for the kind of international cooperation and respect for the sovereignty of forums like the G20. “In clear contrast to Putin’s agitation, the UK and our allies will work together to make meaningful progress in solving the economic challenges we face and improve life for our people.” Under pressure to perform both at home and abroad Mr Sunak – who replaced his hapless predecessor Liz Truss less than three weeks ago – faces a week of tests both internationally and domestically in the UK, where he is due to unveil his long-awaited Autumn Budget on Thursday . The budget announcement could see Chancellor Jeremy Hunt impose up to £60 billion in tax rises and spending cuts as the government battles to balance the books and reduce inflation. But before that, Mr Sunak will face Mr Lavrov in a speech at the first plenary session of the G20 – which all members are expected to attend – on Tuesday.
