Ronnie Brown, aged 81, was reported missing on Sunday (November 6) after failing to return to his home in Wallsend. But today (November 11), specialist officers from Northumbria Police spoke to Ronnie’s family and confirmed that the investigation has been called off.
An investigation has been underway this week with officers trawling the wider area, checking CCTV and carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the hope of locating the missing pensioner. Superintendent Sam Rennison said: “The thoughts of every person at Northumbria Police are with Ronnie’s family today, as they have been since Sunday. “This decision was not taken lightly, but unfortunately, after six days of extensive searching and in consultation with his family, we have made the decision to withdraw. “We combed the area for CCTV and looked at all the possible routes he might have taken. Based on the findings we believe Ronnie headed towards the river and may have fallen into the water.” The Marine Force Unit, with the help of specially trained dogs that can conduct searches in water, joined the search, but unfortunately Ronnie was not seen. Supt Rennison added: “This was not the outcome that anyone would have hoped for and we support Ronnie’s wife and loved ones. “I ask everyone to respect their privacy during this difficult and heartbreaking time. “I also want to take this opportunity to thank the community for their support and our officers for their efforts. Community spirit and compassion are strong in our area and the people of Wallsend really pulled together – thank you. “I also want to thank our partners from other emergency services for their expert assistance.” Read next:
